Woodwind Orchestra Playday

The Woodwind Orchestra Playday at The Venue, Leeds College of Music took place on Saturday 2nd February. It was organised once again by Shea Lonin who works tirelessly to make sure that all the players have the best possible musical experience during the day.

I was lucky enough to have the session just before lunch, so the orchestra was beginning to blend well and were properly warmed up.

We played the woodwind choir version of my own Blackwood Breeze which was played for the first time ever. The music was written for the Blackwood Clarinet group in Nottingham, who premiered it last year.

The arrangement seemed to work well for this combination; the different timbres bringing definition to the canonic writing. Certainly, the bass end was enhanced by bassoons, contra bassoon and a strong bass clarinet section.

My aim was to use the session to create a sense of ensemble and cohesive tonal structure to this group of players and I was really pleased with what they achieved in the 45 minutes.

This type of event is really good for giving players more variety in terms of direction and in the style of playing.

Long may it flourish.
