Conductor\'s Diary October 2008

21st October

YWO rehearsed last night for the forthcoming concert in Bradford and it was a return to the dead room that we are usually in. The group certainly seemed to lack sparkle due to the heat, the acoustic, and the fact that most of the players are feeling the effects of a long sustained busy period. Still, the programme is a good one and they are very talented players. I\'m certain that the concert on 1st Nov will be excellent, full of music and life. There were a few new faces last night and they really did very well to sight read and blend into the group. Well done!

20th October

NSWO deserve a lot of credit for their fortitude and experience. The venue was very difficult on Saturday and the programme was far from easy. Not a single millisecond of reverberation in the room!

There were moments of concern which were quickly rectified but there were moments of magic which were much more important. Well done to all!

19th October

The weekend was a busy one all round. Phoenix had a good concert and that was a relief for me as I missed it. Nicola Kitching had a great wedding which I also missed and NSWO worked very hard against the world\'s deadest room to create a musical and impressive concert for the Windblowers 25th Anniversary Evening in Nottingham; I did attend that!

Now YWO and Harlequin have important events coming up and of course I can only be at one of those. I will conduct the YWO playday and evening concert in Bardford on 1st November.

This is the last week before half term and it will still be a very busy one. There have been a lot of deadlines to meet and references to write but working full-on has become the norm in education now. There are initiatives running concurrently that sometimes do the same job and with double the work and time. I would like to propose a \"teaching week\" when all teachers do is teach. No pro formas to fill in, surveys, observations, reports, reviews, CPD, improvement plans, meetings, no; just teaching. It\'ll never happen.

15th October

You can always tell when things are busy when this site has not been updated since my birthday on the 8th October. That was a week ago and jury service has now finished. Catching up all the things that have piled up during that time is another matter.

NSWO have a concert this weekend and an important one! They should be well placed to perform well. I have some concerns about the conditions in the venue which can be very dry sounding. I have tried to prepare the programme in such a way as to get the best from the room. They never lack effort or experience so I have high hopes for Saturday.

YWO are almost ready for Nov 1st and of course with only 4 hours per month, they have to keep on top of things. With Fete Galante, Danceries, Dreamscapes and other great pieces in the programme that is a musically challenging but rewarding programme for audience and players.

Harlequin are back in action after Holland and are preparing for a big concert inSheffield City Hall. Unfortunately that clashes with the YWO concert. Not good!

The dogs are both much better; yes the little one had to get sick to keep up with Toby. He is back to his old self. You always know when he\'s well because he can be such a pain in the a**. Sophie had an infection and is on antibiotics but is back to her noisy self too. Ths stock markets might be down but I think the vets are doing well enough!

Half term approaches only just over a week to go. Time flies!

Can you tell what it is yet?

2nd Oct

Looks like I\'m on Jury service for the next week. No Harlequin this week due to just coming back from Holland. Phoenix have enjoyed a night with Nigel Street who will replace me on the 18th. So a weird week for me where I have almost never been where I thought I would be. Really confusing everyone. Including me!
