Article: Report

YWO at Saltaire

It was a beautiful evening when the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra squeezed into the venue and there was a very good atmosphere both at the rehearsal and at the concert, which was largely played with the doors open at the back of the room.

It was clear that this room would be a challenge in terms of balance and cohesion and although at times we dealt with it well, there were moments when some instruments inevitably dominated and caused some real balance issues.

The programme was well received by the audience and they were very complimentary about the group and the concert.

It was quite early in the season for a full concert and rehearsal time was minimal. In retrospect, I would have liked to rehearse more of the subtle balance issues to ensure that the control was habitual, I would have liked just to find an optimum tempo for a couple of works that fitted with the blurry acoustics better, whilst keeping the energy in the music.

It was a very good evening for the YWO and I was pleased with the performance of Radio Days which they treated very respectfully and enthusiastically.

There was some excellent playing from all sections on Saturday and in our next concert we can push the boundaries even further and keep control of our sectional balance regardless of the environmental issues.
