Harlequin in Ilkley

Last night saw the beginning of a community concert series at Ilkley Grammar School. This concert was in aid of World Challenge and was very much an experiment to see if there was a demand for this type of programme.

Harlequin Brass played an ambitious, varied and entertaining programme of music which included two of my own compositions. The audience were treated to some fine brass playing and showed considerable appreciation throughout the evening.

I was particularly happy with the level of musical commitment given to \"Closure\" in the second half. The group had clearly had to work very hard in the venue and still came up with a fine performance that reflected the spirit as well as the technical parts of the score.

I am always happy to stand in front of Harlequin Brass and they tend to give their best performances when under pressure. With mid-week fatigue, poor light, travelling times and a hard working day, everyone had to be on their metal. The acoustic was very unforgiving and yet the group consistently managed to work hard enought to tonally fill the space. Notes had to be full length, phrase ends needed extreme care and no hiding place existed in the ensemble all evening.

I often complain to my groups about this and that, sometimes seeming never to be pleased with anything. When a group puts so much into making real music; meaningfully and collectively, any tiny slips are irrelevant compared to the bringing of music to life for the audience.

I went home tired but very satisfied and Harlequin have started the 2009-2010 season with some style.
